Nomination for Dublin 2007 "Citizen of the Year" Nominee: Mr. Rich Guarienti It is with great pleasure t!1at I nominate Rich Guarienti for The City of Dublin 2007 "Citizen of the Year". Rich is a passionate volunteer who is on the Dublin Parks and Community Services Commission, the Liaison to the Senior Center Advisory Committee, serves on the Alameda County Transportation Improvement Authority, and is chairperson of the East Bay Regional Park District Advisory Committee. He is a tireless advocate for bike paths and walkways in Alameda County and links to other regional trails for us all to enjoy nature's beauty, and have fun...... while improving wellness and ov~rall fitness Rich was instrumental in gaining public access to the Alamo Creek Trail allowing all citizens to enjoy this amazing and wonderful walk. Showing creativity and responsibility, he developed and continues to sponsor, lead, and coordinate organized walks for senior citizens and others to meet, socialize, and enjoy the outdoors together in a friendly and rewarding environment, ...and lead a more healthy and active lifestyle. His efforts started small several years ago. And now, twice a week - Tuesday and Thursday - the Trail Trekkers & Path Wanderers, enjoy an hour ...up to a half day.... walking such venues as Dublin's Martin Canyon, Las Trampas and the Sunol Wilderness and also coastal venues in Marin and San Francisco. In 2007, his efforts resulted in over 100 walks and 3000 hours of trekking and wandering throughout the Bay Area. The program attracts tri-valley residents from other communities and senior centers, fostering many social connections and friendships. His Trail Trekkers program won the 2003 "Award of Excellence" from the California Parks and Recreation Society. Each month he publishes a list of the upcoming walks and communicates frequently by email and through the senior center and the website. Walks are aiways led by a volunteer guide, are fully described, mapped and assessed for safety and suitability. A brief is published and distributed with each walk, recommending appropriate clothing, weather precautions, food and refreshment suggestions, and the timing for the event. Respecting our planet, carpooling is used for travel to the trailheads. A complete naturalist and Park Patrol Volunteer, he describes plants, trees, wildlife, and unique geological and geographic features and history of the region. Caring and respecting all ....the walks encourage and accommodate diverse physical abilities, and with diverse cultures, and interests ... there are always active conversations along the trails, mixed with plenty of laughs and giggles. One of the most challenging goals of the senior center and our community is to provide the opportunity and means for people to escape loneliness and their homes, connect with people with common interests, and encourage wellness, discovery, mental stimulation and fun. Rich's positive attitude, persistence, and self-discipline have been instrumental in building and fostering a successful program that has consistently met this challenge head-on. The program continues to grow and spins-off more programs and connections at the senior center and elsewhere, and provides a meaningful and rewarding experience for many of our citizens. He has truly created a program that is the model for grassroots experiences that meet our core values. Beyond these walks and the direct benefits provided to specific groups, Rich's success in adding walking and biking paths throughout our region will directly benefit our children, grandchildren and generations for many years. Rich is truly a valuable community resource and Dublin's "Naturalist version of Glen the Guide". .... I encourage you to join Rich on one of his many adventures ...Guarienti will guarantee a good time.
