FINANCIAL STATEMENT: The construction budget for this project is $201,235, of which
$75,000 is proposed to be paid by Street Light Maintenance
Assessment District 83-1. The balance would be paid from the
City's General Fund.
DESCRIPTION: This is the fourth and final year of a four-year project to replace old
painted steel street light poles in subdivisions that were constructed in the 1960's. These ungalvanized
poles have deteriorated over time and many arc corroded to the point of nceding replacement. The project
was originally conceived as a five- to six-year project; howcver, the work has been escalated due to the
potential risk caused by the deteriorated poles. Approximately 234 poles have bcen replaced in the first
three phases of thc project, and an additional cight to ten poles have been replaced through thc City's
street light maintenance contract with Alameda County. It is proposed to replace the remaining poles with
the 2005-2006 project.
The 2005-2006 project is anticipated to replace approximately 117 polcs in the area north of Amador
Valley Boulevard between 1-680 and San Ramon Road. The new poles would be constructed of
galvanized steel, which has an estimated lifc span of 60 years or morc. The galvanized poles would
reduce ongoing maintenance costs (approximately $20,000 per year) by eliminating the need to paint the
poles every five years.
Staff recommends that the City Council authorize the solicitation of bids for Contract 05-09, Street Light
Pole Replacement, Phase 4.
