DUBLIN SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE
AGENDA STATEMENT
MEETING DATE:March 3, 2005
SUBJECT: Senior Talent Show Proposal
ATTACHMENTS: None
RECOMMENDATION: Receive report, provide input on the proposed program plan and
appoint one Committee Member to serve on a subcommittee to
assist with event planning and promotion.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: The Heritage and Cultural Arts Division of the Parks & Community
Services Department is interested in offering a new special event to the Dublin community and in
particular, the senior population. As an opportunity to showcase the new Senior Center, which is
scheduled to open sometime this summer, Staff is recommending a Senior Talent Show be offered at the
facility during the spring of 2006.
Background
At the meeting of the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission on February 10, 2005, Staff presented
several program ideas to the Commission in consideration of offering a new special event during Fiscal
Year 2005-2006. The potential program that the Commission was most interested in was to produce a
Senior Talent Show at the new Senior Center. The Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission felt that
seniors collectively don't get many opportunities to display their numerous artistic talents to members of
the community. With the advent of a new facility, the Commission felt this to be an opportune time to
celebrate the abilities of the senior population through a performing arts program. Adding a Talent Show
featuring local senior performers will also provide exposure of Senior Center programs to the greater
community.
Event Details
Staff envisions offering the Senior Talent Show as a one-time event on a Saturday or Sunday, sometime
during spring 2006. The event would showcase senior performers in the categories of music, singing,
dance, comedy, and acting. Open auditions could be held, and performers need not be limited to Dublin
residents. A professional Director would be hired to coordinate the production and technical aspects of the
show. Additional costs would include decorations, a pianist, technical , equipment, programs and
advertising. In addition, a pool of volunteers would be needed to assist with various tasks. The total
• budget would be approximately $5,000. Part of the expenses could be recouped through ticket sales and
in-kind donations. The Heritage and Cultural Arts Division would prepare and administer the budget for
the event within the City's 2005-2006 Fiscal Year Budget. There would be no fiscal impact on the Senior
Center operations.

Event Goals
The specific goals envisioned to be accomplished by this event are:
• Showcase the varied talents of the senior population in and around Dublin
• Promote the activities and programs of the new Dublin Senior Center
• Promote the importance of the performing arts in the community
• Provide a vehicle for seniors'to actively engage in an enjoyable and rewarding activity
In order to accomplish the goals, Staff recommends the Chairperson appoint one Advisory Committee
Member to serve on a subcommittee to assist Staff with planning and promoting the event. Using input
from the Advisory Committee meeting, the subcommittee will meet with Staff to prepare a detailed
program plan which will be presented at a future Advisory Committee meeting.
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the Committee receive the report, provide input on the proposed program plan and
appoint one Committee Member to serve on a subcommittee to assist with event planning and promotion.
