DESCRIPTION: The Dublin Senior Center strives to provide diverse activities that
strengthen participants' physical, cognitive and mental wellness. The Trips and Tours Program and
extended travel programs, result in multiple benefits for participants. Travel opens up a whole new world
of discovery, experience and lifelong learning. Recurring events, like the daily lunch program, weekly
food distribution, and monthly special luncheons are reassuring and dependable. These activities
reinforce community relations and maintain nutritional balance. Following.is the summary of attendance
during the spring 2005 quarter.

Attachment 1 is a detailed attendance report. The attendance of the Senior Center programs and activities
reflects a decline in attendance. This is primarily attributable to a reduction in the number of classes and
programs due to illnesses and other circumstances. Additionally participation in some programs may
have been affected by the fee increases established in September 2004. Yet the newer programs, such as
the Crossing Cultures Program, and both the local and the extended travel, have grown and appeal to
many new participants. This growth is most noticeable in the number of new Supporters receipted, and
new patrons registered in the Extended Travel Programs and for Foundation Trips.

Many of the long-time volunteers became ill in 2005. Although the number of volunteer hours notably
dropped, this does not suggest that the need for volunteers and the level of service have reduced. Staff
managed to maintain the normal level of service with less volunteer help. Staff also pitched in to help
maintain and complete tasks normally performed by a volunteer. Groups, such as the Dublin Rotary Club,
provide the needed manpower to serve meals at the monthly Special Luncheons.

During the spring quarter, the Special Luncheons included the St. Patrick's luncheon, a Hollywood
themed luncheon, and Mother's Day luncheon. For entertainment, the seniors enjoyed listening to a
Celtic harpist in March, a special presentation called "Hollywood Hats" in April, and vocalist, Shirley
Dougarian, in May.
The Crossing Cultures program continues to grow and give the audience an opportunity to get a taste of
different ethnic cuisines while learning interesting facts about each country. In March the event was
"Discover Italy where Italian art and artists were the main topic of discussion. For "Discover India",
various house wares were displayed, and there were demonstrations on how to wrap and dress in a sari.
For "Discover Mexico", the speaker discussed interesting facts about the Mexican culture and held a
fashion show. Outfits representing different regions of Mexico were modeled by the grandchildren of the
senior patron who made and prepared various garments for the show.
In March, a Train Ride in Oakdale and a trip to the Cliff House and the Legion of Honor were offered. In
April, a trip to Fallon, and a second trip to the Cliff House and the Legion of Honor were scheduled. In
May, a third trip to the Cliff House was requested, and seniors enjoyed the live performance of the
musical "Cats". Collette Vacations offered an extended trip to Ireland in March, and the Mackinac
Islands in May. The Dublin Senior Foundation offered a casino trips to Jackson Rancheria in March, and
Chuchanski in May.
In April, thirty seniors were treated to an A's Game in Oakland by thirty Wells Middle School Leadership
students. As a service project, the Leadership group elected to treat seniors to a professional baseball
game. They raised enough money to pay for each person's round trip BART fare, admission to the game
and lunch. This event turned out to be a fantastic intergenerational program.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended the Advisory Committee receive the report.
