The June 4, 1998 meeting of the Youth Advisory Committee was called to order at 7:39 p.m. at the Civic Center,
Dublin California,by Chairperson Garren.
Pledge of Allegiance .

Roll Call
Committee members Present: Arcuri, Chapman, Garren, Cooper,Ross,Pedersen, Seals, Sugiyama
Committee members Absent: Brown,Yniguez,Rubert, Gill,Kaur

Approval of Minutes-
Committee member Chapman made a motion to approve the minutes of May 14, 1998.
Committee member Gill seconded the motion.

Unfinished Business-
Dub Town Jam Evaluation
Staff asked reviewed the logistics of the event and commented that approximately 300 youth were in attendance of the
event.
Committee Member Chapman- Felt that the event was great. This was a successful event that served a wide age
range. During the event there was competition between the band'and the radio station for the attention of the crowd.
Committee Member Cooper- Observed that there were more younger teens than older ones. Also having the band
complete their set first then have a DJ play would improve the event.
Committee Member Pedersen-He felt that the event was successful and it was an event that parents could attend too.
Committee Member Arcuri- Received comments from teens that the Tower Records give away t-shirts were popular
but the CD give aways were not. The radio station 94..9's appearance at the event was very popular.
Overall the Youth Advisory Committee felt that this was successful event. The timing of the event was good and ,
should be repeated in the future with more bands.
Upcoming Summer Events
Staff reported that summer programming was focused on two pool parties called Dive-Ins, one dance in July at the

in July at Shannon Center and open gym nights. Plans are getting underway to market the activities to teens
in Dublin. Staff asked for the Committee's input`,.on promoting events.
Committee Member Perdersen suggested that the movie Billy Madison be shown a the pool.
Committee Member Chapman made a motion to have a Sub-committee work on promotion of summer events.
Committee Member Cooper seconded the motion

A sub committee was appointed by Chairperson Garren. The appointees were Arcuri, Pederesn, Garren and Seals.
From the crowd leadership class member Naheel volunteered to serve.
Recruitment and Selection of Next Y.A.C.
Staff reviewed the application and appointment timeline and procedures for selection of the 1998/99 Youth Advisory '
Committee as well as current applications received according to school and grade. Staff asked for the Committee's
input on targeting more teens for applications.
Staff followed up on the Youth Advisory Committee's request to have a graduating Youth Advisory Committee
member be on the Youth Advisory Selection Committee as to ensure that a youth familiar with the demands of
serving on the Committee would have input on the selection of future members. The Commission felt having the
Student Representative of the Parks and Community Services Commission on the Youth Advisory Selection
Committee provided for that perspective.
Committee Member Garren commented that the Student Representative of the Parks and Community Services
Commission may not have participated on the Youth Advisory Committee and would not have the perspective of
serving on the Y.A.C.when making recommendations.
The Committee directed staff to further pursue having a graduating member of the Youth Advisory Committee serve
on the Youth Advisory Selection Committee.
Committee Member Arcuri suggested that applicants not selected for Y.A.C. be encouraged to participate on a sub-
committee.
Committee Member Cooper motioned to have 4 standing sub-committees for YAC members and non-members to
serve on. The standing sub-committees for 1) sports 2) summer activities 3)concerts/dances 4) Random Acts of
Kindness

New Business-
Meeting Date for Youth Advisory Committee
Staff summarize the Youth Advisory Committee's bylaws stating that the Youth Advisory Committee shall
hold meetings at least once a month at a designated time and place that shall be fixed and determined by the
Advisory Committee and entered upon its minutes." According to schedules submitted at the last meeting
Thursday was the only day with no conflicts. S.aff asked the Committee to set a regular meeting day of the
month.
Committee'Member Gill Motioned that the Youth Advisory Committee meet the 1st Thursday of each month. �

Business
Y.A.C. Retreat
Staff reviewed retreat ideas brought up at the May 14 th meeting which included camping,trip to Great America
going to a local retreat or using a facility in Dublin for a retreat. The retreat would serve as a time to recognize
outgoing member and evaluate the first term of the Y.A.C.

Staff asked that the Committee discuss the concept of a retreat and logistics of a retreat if one was to be held.
Committee Member Chapman motioned to have a day retreat at a local facility or park at end of July
Committee Member Cooper seconded the motion

Other Business
Brief INFORMATIONAL. ONLY Reports from the Youth Advisory Committee and/or Staff
The floor was open to discussion at this point and Committee members were allowed to speak about items not on the
agenda that they wanted to share or bring to the attention of the Committee.
Wierschem- Reported that the relay for life event was taking place in Dublin on June 13th and the event was still in
need of volunteers. If anyone was interested in helping with face painting and check-in to contact her after the
meeting.
Wierschem- Reported that the San Ramon Teen Advisory Council was going to present their findings on teen centers
to the City Council on June 23rd's Council meeting. The committee was encouraged to send a representative from
Dublin to attend the meeting and report back. Committee Members Arcuri, Chapman and Pederesen expressed and
interest in attending.
Ashby- Reported having organized a Summer Youth Leadership Program that will foster leadership skills in youth
and expose them to leadership opportunities in the community.
Seals- Paige Brown a prior Teen Task Force member is helping organize along with Friday Night Live a leadership
program that targets Arroya Vista youth. The program is still looking for a facility to meet in.
