Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report—2006 2. Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report—2005 RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The Heritage and Cultural Arts Division develops and implements quality programs that strengthen community image, preserve the City's heritage, provide recreational experiences, and encourage healthy lifestyles. This is accomplished by providing diverse cultural program offerings in the areas of music, theatre, dance, and visual arts. Following is a summary of programs conducted during winter 2006. CULTURAL ARTS CLASSES Cultural Arts Classes serve customers of all ages and cover a wide variety of activities such as Ballet & Tap, Piano, Guitar, Belly Dance, Irish Dance, Painting, Country Line Dance, Hip Hop, Cheerleading, Kindermusik, and others. Classes provide an opportunity for participants to gain an appreciation for the arts, use their talents to attempt new experiences, refine current skills, as well as providing a venue for meeting new people and sharing cultural arts experiences with friends and family members. Cultural Arts Classes are taught by contracted specialty instructors. Most classes are taught in eight-week sessions but some are more or less than eight weeks and others are offered as one-time workshops. In spring 2005, all dance classes that were previously administered by the Parks and Community Services Division were transferred to the Heritage and Cultural Arts Division, which was the more appropriate program area. Dance classes offered in 2005 have been included in the 2005 to 2006 registration comparison to demonstrate the actual growth of arts classes over the past two winter quarters. A total of 375 participants registered for Cultural Arts Classes during winter 2006, which was an increase of 102% over the winter 2005. This is attributable to the addition of many new classes as well as more diverse cultural program offerings. The cancellation rate was virtually the same for 2005 and 2006. The average registration per class decreased over last year by approximately two participants per class, but this may be attributed to participants having many more choices of programs in which to enroll (52 classes in 2006 as opposed to 21 classes in 2005). Popular classes included Country Line Dance, Hip Hop, Ballet, Irish Dance, Kindermusik, Holiday Workshop, and Dance Porn, and Cheerleading. Attachment 2 is a Registration Report for winter 2005 for comparison purposes. REPEAT CLASSES Classes that prove to be popular and have an established participant following are repeated from session to session. Evaluations are typically sent out to participants in selected classes to determine if the class curriculum is meeting their expectations. Comments both positive and negative are shared with instructors. This past winter, many classes were again offered as repeat classes due to their popularity. These classes included; Ballet & Tap, Beginning Guitar, Irish Dance, Boogie with your Baby, Belly Dance, Hip Hop, Country Line Dance,' Cheerleading, Piano Keyboard, Twist and Shout, and Kindermusik. NEW CLASSES In the past year, many new classes have been offered and become 'established as popular program offerings. In a number of cases, it has typically taken a few seasons for the classes to catch on with the public. In the case that a class doesn't catch on after two or three seasons, it is usually not offered again and replaced with a new type of program. In the winter session, a number of new programs in the categories of visual arts, music, music appreciation, and cultural dance were offered. Although most of these classes were cancelled, they have been offered again this spring, with increased success. The purpose of the Series is to offer additional performing arts programs as a balance to the Summer Concert Series and to also showcase the Heritage Center and Old Saint Raymond's Church to the general public. The Series total entertainment cost $2,600 this past year. Admission was charged to offset most of the direct costs for the program. The concerts were general admission, $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets were sold in advance for the last three concerts, but this proved unnecessary, and will not be repeated next year. The first concert on October 29, Spooktacular—Dr. Meridian & the Countess, was not well attended and Staff will re-evaluate the type of entertainment to offer for this first concert. The other four concerts experienced good to excellent attendance and overall comments on the performances were highly favorable. The concerts included; November 12 — Oak, Ash, and Thorn, December 3 — The Gifts of the Magi, January 14—James Robinson, Jazz Guitarist, and February 11 —Bell&Branch. RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of Staff that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission receive the report from Staff. 2 of Winter 2006 -Cultural Arts • Quarterly Report Exhibit ." 4 CUSS ' fix.
