SUBJECT: Murray Schoolhouse 150th Anniversary Celebration and Exhibit
Grand Opening

FINANCIAL STATEMENT: The estimated cost to the City for the Grand Opening Celebration is
$4,150; sufficient funds are available in the Heritage & Cultural Arts
Budget.
DESCRIPTION: In Fiscal Year 2005-2006 the Dublin City Council rated as a high
priority goal: "Coordinate grand re-opening of the Murray Schoolhouse to commemorate the 150`x'
anniversary of the schoolhouse upon completion of the exhibit restoration project". With the pending
completion of the new exhibit, The Journey, and the 150th Anniversary of the Murray Schoolhouse, plans
are now in place for grand opening events for the public. Two events are scheduled for the Grand
Opening and 150th Anniversary Celebration of the Schoolhouse. The first event is the preview party
sponsored by the Dublin Historic Preservation Association. The second event is a Grand Opening
Celebration sponsored by the City of Dublin. A summary of the two events follows.
KICK-OFF EVENT
The Dublin Historic Preservation Association (DHPA) has generously offered to host a special Friday
evening event from 6:00 to 10:00 pm on August 4, 2006 to kick-off the 150th Anniversary Celebration of
the Murray Schoolhouse.
DHPA will be hosting an elegant dinner held in a tent on the Heritage Center grounds. Beverages will be
served in commemorative glasses imprinted with the 150th Anniversary logo. A.Cowboy Poet and the
"Dublin Old Time Fiddler's Band" will provide entertainment. There will be a screening of the new
"Heritage Center Orientation Video," (generously sponsored by the DHPA), and guests will be the first to
tour the new exhibit, "The Journey". DHPA anticipates attendance between 120 to 150 guests.
Invitations have been sent to DHPA ,Members and City dignitaries, and if room allows, additional
reservations will be open to the public. DHPA's goal is to simply cover costs for the event. Portable
lighting will be provided since the event is in the evening. Parking will be coordinated by closing off

Donlon Way south from St. Raymond's Church. A local Boy Scout troop will provide parking attendants
to direct traffic into the Dublin Square Shopping Center or allow homeowners to pass through the gated
off area. DHPA will work with the Dublin Square business owners to obtain permission for parking for
the Friday evening event.
GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION
The City of Dublin will host a public Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday August 5, 2006 from 1:00-
4:00 pm. As proposed, the event will feature a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and a variety of family friendly
activities:
• Tours of the new museum
• Refreshments, anniversary cup cakes and lemonade
• Strolling cowboy and singing groups
• Irish and cowboy storytelling and harpist.
• Demonstrations of Ohlone people building a Tule House and other traditional arts
• Children's games and crafts including"panning for gold" and cowboy collages
• Distribution of the "Dublin Gazette" activity booklet with commemorative wooden nickels
awarded for successful completion of the booklet
On Sunday, August 6, the event will put the emphasis on the new museum and feature tours from 1:00 to
4:00 pm for the public.
Prior to the event, Staff conducted a coloring contest for elementary school students and a photo caption
contest for teenagers. The submittals from the youth have been posted in the Civic Center in order to
bring attention to the Grand Opening. Also, colorful postcards and posters featuring the exhibit logo and
grand opening information have been printed and distributed to the public and local businesses, as well as
promotional information in the lobby display case at the Dublin Library. Additionally, press releases
promoting the Grand Opening have been distributed to the local media and ads will be run in the Tri
Valley Herald the weeks of July 24 and 31.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission
receive the report.
