MEETING DATE:July 8, 2004
SUBJECT: Dublin Transit Center Art Project
ATTACHMENTS: None
RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: In 2004-2005 the Dublin City Council rated as a high priority goal:
"work with the developer to locate significant works of art in two key places of the Dublin Transit Center,
the Village Green Center and the "Iron Horse"Plaza. "
•
In May 2003, the Surplus Property Authority of Alameda County entered into a Development Agreement
with the City of Dublin for the Dublin Transit Center Project. As part of the agreement, the Developer
agrees to contribute Two Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollars ($ 250,000.00) for construction of public art.
Staff has met with Stuart Cook, representative for the Alameda County Surplus Property Authority and
has agreed to work together on the art project. The artist or artist team will be hired at the front end of the
Transit Center Project along with the landscape architect so that the art components can be integrated into
the infrastructure of the project rather than placed afterwards.
The goal of the artwork will be to create a sense of place and make pedestrian friendly several outdoor
areas that lead into the Dublin-Pleasanton BART station. As part of the new Dublin Transit Center,
property will be a mixed use to include village green, residential units, office space, a neighborhood park,
and a parking garage adjacent to the BART station and public roads. The focused area for the art project's
will include the Village Green and the intersections at DeMarcus Boulevard and Iron Horse Parkway
intersections and the pedestrian walkway leading into the BART station.
A limited number of artists have been invited to participate in the art project. The selection committee
will consist of the Heritage and Cultural Arts Supervisor, Parks and Facilities Development Manager,
Stuart Cook, Alameda County Surplus Property Authority and the Authority's Landscape Architect for the
project. The selection committee will review the artists/teams resumes and slides. Upon review, three to
five artists/teams will be interviewed for a full proposal of their project design. Upon selection of the
finalist the final design project will be presented to the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission for review
and input. Upon their approval, the project will be presented to City Council for final approval to be
integrated in to the project. The selection process will be reviewed by the City Council at the July 6,
2004 meeting of the Council. If changes to the process are made by the Council, Staff will present the
Commission with a verbal update.
RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report from Staff.
