MEETING DATE: September 23, 2009
SUBJECT: Summer 2009 Teen Programs Quarterly Report
Report prepared by Frank Luna, Recreation Supervisor

RECOMMENDATION: Receive report
FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION: _ The Parks and Community Services Department develops and
implements quality programs that strengthen community •image, provide recreational experiences,
encourage healthy lifestyles. One of ways this is accomplished is by providing innovative recreation
programs for teens. Following is a summary of summer 2009 teen programs and events.
Junior Leader Program •
The Junior Leader Program provided teens ages 13 to 16 with an opportunity to learn valuable job skills
while volunteering with the Parks and Community Services Departments summer camp programs. Junior
Leaders received instruction in resume writing, mastering the interview, searching for a job, self esteem,
"what is a volunteer", safety and the value of teamwork. These topics were instructed by Department
Staff. The Junior Leaders assisted Recreation Leaders with conducting camp programs at Camp Emerald
Glen, Fun in the Sun, Tenderfoot Day Camp, and the Glen the Guide Nature Day Camp. This summer 33
Junior Leaders volunteered between 8 to 20 hours per week at a specific camp site. They assisted site
staff with the organization and implementation of activities. The Junior Leaders gained valuable
experience through this program which enhanced their social, intellectual, physical and emotional
development. The Junior Leaders also gained lifelong learning skills which they will use throughout their
educational and professional experiences. Following is a summary of participation in the program.

Teen Website
The goal of providing the website www.dubtownteens.com is to,provide a means for "getting the word
out" to teens about the many things to do in Dublin, from recreational and entertainment activities to jobs
and volunteer opportunities. The teen website provides information on teen issues, events, job postings,
feature stories, and any other information the Youth Advisory Committee believes important to
communicate to Dublin youth. Following is a summary of the use of the website by the public.
Teen Website Usage Comparison
2009 2008 2007 , .
Total Visitors 3,895 . 6,863 3,784
Total Number of Hits (Clicks) 42,843 83,045 41,665
The website is a valuable tool for teens in the community to find information regarding City of Dublin
teen events and programs, as well as other teen resources in the area. The jobs page was the most popular
page visited this past summer with 364 visits. Working collaboratively with Dublin High newspaper
(Dublin Shield) posted on the website attracts many Dublin High students to the site during the school
year. Since school is out during the summer, the number of visitors has decreased in comparison to the
previous months.
Total Recreation Live (TRL) Camp
TRL was a summer-camp program which featured sporting events, enrichment activities, and exciting
excursions to local venues. TRL was for teens entering sixth through ninth grades. The program
consisted of eight one-week sessions, held Monday through Friday from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Activities
included sports, enrichment classes such as skateboard camps, babysitting child safety, sports nutrition for
teens and local excursions. The TRL camp was planned to provide teens an opportunity to make new
friends and experience unique recreational activities.
Unfortunately the camp was cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. A minimum of 10 participants,pr
week on the average were needed in order to conduct the camp. At the start of the summer there was only
an average of five participants registered per week. The week with the most registration was only eight
people. Therefore, Staff decided to cancel the entire summer so that families would have time to make
other arrangements. The following is a summary of registration for prior years.
TRL Camp Registration Comparison
Registration Type 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004
Resident 96 • 174 160 125 62
Non Resident 3 13 22 16 4
• Total Registration 99 187 182 141 66
One of the factors that may have contributed to the decrease in TRL registration was the addition of
several other camps and summer sports programs for middle school students.
Staff is requesting that prior to the meeting, the Youth Advisory Committee Members discuss with their
friends what types of camps and programs they would likely participate in during the summer.
Committee Members are asked to bring these ideas to the meeting to share with the group and provide
feedback to Staff as planning begins for summer 2010 teen programs and camps.
Dive In Movie
Over 40 teens/youth enjoyed viewing the move "Transformers" on June 12, 2009 at the Dublin Swim
Center. Participants were able to watch the movie on a big screen while swimming and enjoying water
games.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Youth Advisory Committee receive the
report.
