DCITY of PARKS AND COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMISSION
UBLIN MEETING DATE: October 21, 2013
SUBJECT: Positano Hills Park—Site Modifications
Prepared by Rosemary Alex, Parks and Facilities Development
Coordinator
ATTACHMENTS: 1. Play Area Modifications—Two Options
RECOMMENDATION: 1. Receive presentation from Staff
2. Receive public comment on the site modifications
3. Recommend approval of a preferred option to
the City Council.
DESCRIPTION:
On August 14, 2013 the Staff held a public meeting to review feedback received from an on-line survey
and to solicit additional information from the public on their preferences for potential modifications to
Positano Hills Park. Based on feedback from the public meeting and on-line survey the public priorities
for site modifications included the following:
Play Area for Children Ages 5-12
1) Additional climbing elements
2) Additional swings
3) Higher slide structure
Site Shading
1) Shade elements installed adjacent to play area
2) Additional trees adjacent to play area
Generally the public wants a larger play area with more play elements for children 5 to 12. In response
to those preferences Staff worked with the Landscape Architect to develop two alternatives to add play
components geared for children ages 5-12, which are depicted in Attachment 1 and described below.
Alternative#1 Play Area
This alternative includes the relocation of the existing rope bridge from the lower level play area and
attaches it to the existing slide. The space opened up by the relocation of the rope bridge is modified
and a typical two bay swing set is added. The existing climbing rock is realigned and the area expanded
to add two additional climbing rocks that are up to 6' tall.
COPIES TO: A Public Meeting notice was sent to residences within 500-feet of the proposed park parcel and to a list of interested
parties from prior public meetings on the proposed site modifications.

Alternative#2 Play Area
Includes the relocation of the existing rope bridge from the lower level play area and attaches it to the
existing slide. The space opened up by the relocation of the rope bridge is modified and a tire swing is
added. The existing rock is re-aligned and the area expanded to accommodate a more traditional play
system with a 6' tall slide with climbing and access features.
Cost Estimate including 10%contingency
Play Area Option #1 Alternate 2D $138,160
Play Area Option#2 Alternate 2E $131,417
Available Budget for Construction $130,000
Since the cost estimate to do either of the two play area revisions exceeds the available budget, Staff
recommends that the addition of trees or a shade element near the playground area be bid as an
alternate item. Staff will explore low cost options to achieve more shade where possible.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Parks and Community Services
Commission receive the presentation from City Staff, receive public comment and recommend approval
of a preferred playground alternative to the City Council.
