DESCRIPTION: In Fiscal Year 2009-2010, the City Council identified as a high
priority objective; "Implement a self study and peer review for the Phase II Museum Assessment Program
(MAP) — Public Dimension Assessment for the Dublin Heritage Center". The purpose of the objective is
to enhance the quality of operations at the Dublin Heritage Center. The current status of the objective is
that the Dublin Heritage Center has been selected as one of 106 U.S. institutions to participate in the
Museum Assessment Program (MAP) this year. The MAP is a self-improvement tool for museums.
Through a process of extensive self-study, peer review and innovation, MAP enables museums to
improve operations in a range of areas, thereby empowering them to better fulfill their mission of public
service. MAP is administered by the American Association of Museums (AAM), through a cooperative
agreement with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The Heritage Center has already
accomplished Phase I of the MAP program, with many new enhancements being initiated based on the
recommendations of the MAP Committee and Project Surveyor.
The Heritage Center will undergo its Phase II site visit in November of this year. Nancy Bryk, Director of
Education at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum is the Project Surveyor for the Heritage Center. Ms.
Bryk's first site visit day is on Sunday November 22, 2009. There will be a meeting with stakeholders in
the early evening of that day and Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission members are welcome to
participate. Notices of the meeting will be sent in October to stakeholders such as members of the Dublin
Historical Preservation Association and Heritage Center volunteers. Ms. Bryk will conduct her site visit
on November 23rd and 24th. Following her three day visit to the Heritage Center, Ms. Bryk will
complete an analysis and make recommendations on ways to improve the public dimension and visitor
experience at the Center.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission
receive the report.
