Youth Advisory Committee Agenda Statement dated June 22, 2011 RECOMMENDATION: Receive report and identify Advisory Committee Goals for the 2011-2012 term FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: At the June 22, 2011 meeting, the Youth Advisory Committee was asked to identify Committee goals for the 2011-2012 term. , During the meeting, the Committee brainstormed ideas and identified four possible issues or interests that could be established as goals for the 2011-2012 term. The issues were: • Educating Students regarding the negative effects of "Texting and Driving." • Plan fundraising activities for the Youth Fee Assistance Program. • Provide students with resources so they can better deal with stress from too" much homework, sports, SAT testing, college applications and peer pressure. • Provide resources or educate students how to deal with "bullying." The Committee Members continued to discuss these ideas, but did not decide on which goals to pursue. As the meeting was running late, the Committee recommended continuing the discussion at the next scheduled Youth Advisory Committee Meeting in July 2011. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the Youth Advisory Committee receive the report and identify Advisory Committee goals for the 2011-2012 term. Status Report on 2010-2011 Goals RECOMMENDATION: Receive report and identify goals for the 2011-2012 term FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: As discussed in Item 7.1 the general responsibilities of the Youth Advisory Committee Member as included in the Bylaws and Rules of Procedure are as follows: A. Provide input on youth services and programming to the Parks and Community Services Commission, City Council and to City Staff. B. Address issues that affect youth in the community. C. Assist with the promotion and implementation of youth activities. D. Generate an annual report on the progress of the Youth Advisory Committee. In order to accomplish these general responsibilities, Committee Members need to establish goals so they can describe what they want to accomplish and how to get it done. If goals are not established, it may be difficult for Committee Members to stay focused and accomplish what is most important to the group. Generally, a goal describes what a particular activity or program is about and what it will accomplish. Attachment 1 summarizes the Youth Advisory Committee goals from the 2010-2011 term as well as the status of the goals. In the process of developing goals, it is important that the Youth Advisory Committee consider issues and interests of Dublin youth and teens. As part of the application process for the 2011-2012 Youth Advisory Committee, applicants were asked "What do you believe are issues teens in Dublin are currently dealing with?" Below is a summary of the issues identified by the teen applicants. • Nothing to do after school • Smoking and drugs • Not having an input or say in decisions (teens want to be heard) COPIES TO: ITEM NO.: 7.3 G:\YAC\l 1\12 AGENDASTMNn7.3 ATTACHMENT 1 • Too much stress • Making the right choices when picking lunches / learning to make the right food choices • Dealing with sports (no athletic ability) • Procrastination • Stress and not enough time to get out of the house • Not doing well with homework and tests • Increasing dependency on technology • Problems in social life • Lack of a hangout place to go • Struggles with academic progress • Uninformed on different events in Dublin and surrounding areas • Not having many activities and places to go after school and on the weekend • Not many service projects or events for teens to attend • Not having a specific place to go for help for emotional reasons or educational purposes • Balancing extra curriculars with school • Dealing with college applications • Apprehension about STAR Testing • Bullying and harassment • Stress, peer pressure and low self-esteem • Nothing to do in Dublin • Lack of participation in the community RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the Youth Advisory Committee receive the report and identify goals for the 2011-2012 term. 2 of 3 STATUS REPORT ON YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE 2010-2011 GOALS GOAL 1 Continue to offer an after school tutoring assistance program for students at a specified Dublin elementary school. The program will assist students needing help with various academic subjects. Objective 1.1 Establish a tutoring assistance program subcommittee. Objective 1.2 Establish program plan and present to Youth Advisory Committee. Objective 1.3 Begin program during the fall school year. This goal was partially accomplished. Subcommittee members intended on beginning the tutoring program at the start of the school year, but time constraints by members delayed the implementation of the program. Information regarding the tutoring program was disseminated to the elementary schools late in the school year, and as a result, there were not many inquiries by students for the program. GOAL 2 Continue to conduct fundraising activities to raise funds for the Dublin Youth Fee Assistance Program. Objective 1.1 Establish a fundraising subcommittee. Objective 1.2 Work with Staff in the planning of the activities. Objective 1.3 Fundraising activities to take place throughout the school year. The Committee Members participated and coordinated various activities to raise funds for the Youth Fee Assistance program. Activities included a booth at the St. Patrick's Day Festival at which raffle prizes were given away by spinning a wheel. This event raised over $500. The Committee Members sold ice cream at the Car Show/Ice Cream social event and raised $85 for the program. The Committee Members also raised $50 by selling snacks at two teen dances that were scheduled throughout the year. 3 of 3
