The plan includes a strategic goal to re-align existing programs and create new offerings to promote and support: ¦ Positive youth development and strong families ¦ Active lifestyles involving sports and fitness ¦ Appreciation of nature and participation in unique and adventurous outdoor recreational activities Staff has made changes to the 2010 summer camp offerings for youth and teens that will help the City achieve these strategic goals. Some of the changes will also help the City deliver services in a mare cost effective manner, without sacrificing program quality or reducing capacity. The following is an overview of the changes. FUN IN THE SUN The "Fun in the Sun" (FITS) summer camp program has been one of the Department's most popular summer camp programs for over 20 years. This program is offered to youth entering first through fifth grades. Prior to summer 2008, the FITS program was held in four parks. In 2008 and 2009 the City offered four sites however one had to be cancelled each year due to insufficient registration. Based on the level of demand for the past two years, during summer 2010 FITS will be offered at three sites including Shannon, Kolb and Emerald Glen parks, which have been the most popular in recent years. For summer 2010, Staff will be adding an additional component to FITS. The program currently offers a variety of activities to participants that include organized games, arts and crafts, weekly events and excursions, and a trip to the Dublin Swim Center. The new component is a"Fitness Hour" that will be COPIES TO: ITEM NO.: 8.2 GAPARKS COMMISSIONWGNDSTMT\2010\3-15 Item 8.2 Summer Camp Update.doc incorporated into the daily programming. The "Fitness Hour" will feature fun exercises, stretching and games promoting cardiovascular health with a focus on fun. With childhood obesity on the rise and the reduction of physical education classes in school, it is more important than ever to provide youth with techniques to stay healthy. The Fitness Hour will introduce concepts to the participants regarding nutrition and how to develop healthy eating habits. Each day participants will engage in stretching, cardiovascular exercise, and fun active games and activities. Staff will have participants keep a suminer journal that will track participant's progress throughout the summer. Each day a recreation leader or fitness instructor will incorporate an educational aspect. Topics of discussion will include proper stretching exercises, tips on eating healthy, and how to read food labels. COMBINATION OF NATURE DAY CAMP AND CAMP EMERALD GLEN In 2009 the City added the new Nature Day Camp Program at Shannon Park, which was a full-day camp program that had similar operational hours and registration fees as Camp Emerald Glen. Nine one week sessions of Nature Day Camp were offered and three had to be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. However the program served 69 unique individuals and had an average of 20 campers per week with a high of 25 and a low of 14. During the weeks that were cancelled, those registered were transferred to the Camp Emerald Glen program. For Camp Emerald Glen, ten one-week sessions were offered, of which three had to be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. The total registration for this summer was 125, and 56 for the extended care option. This was a decrease of 49%. Camp Emerald Glen served 72 unique individuals. It should be noted that if you combine the total registration from Camp Emerald Glen with Nature Day Camp in 2009, the total registration number is equal to the 2008 Camp Emerald Glen registration. Offering two similar camps basically split the market. Since it is more cost effective to offer one full-day camp rather than two, Staff has cancelled Camp Emerald Glen far 2010. The Nature Day Camp program has the capacity to serve up to 40 campers per week. Offering the Nature Day Camp as the primary full-day camp for youth entering first through sixth grades will streamline service delivery while maintaining affordable prices and quality experiences. The hours for Nature Day Camp will adjust to operate from 9:00am to S:OOpm with available extended care option to operate from 8:00am to 6:00pm. The weekly registration fees for the program have been adjusted for the additional time on a cost per hour basis and are $162 for Dublin residents and $186 for non residents. The extend care option is $65 for residents and $75 for non residents. Glen the Guide Nature Day Camp is an all day suinmer camp with an emphasis on teaching participants about local ecology, biology and nature studies. The Glen the Guide Nature Day Camp is based at the Shannon Community Center "Nature Nook". The camp provides a traditional camp experience that includes arts and crafts, traditional camp games, songs and activities. A unique aspect of the Glen the Guide Nature Day camp is that a Naturalist from the East Bay Regional Park District visits twice a week providing presentations on nature and ecology. This program helps accomplish the Department's strategic goal of facilitating learning about the environment and inviting the public to be active participants in environmental stewardship. TEEN CIRCUIT REPLACING TOTAL RECREATOIN LIVE (TRL) CAMP The Total Recreation Live (TRL) program was a summer camp for teens entering sixth through ninth grades and consisted of eight one-week sessions. The program ran from 12:30pm to 5:30pm each day. Participants enjoyed a variety of activities which. included sports, enrichment classes, and local excursions. 2 of 4 Unfortunately this past summer the program was completely cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. . This may be attributable to the addition of several teen sports camps at Dublin High School which were popular with the middle school age group. Since the number of contractual camps available for teens has increased, Staff has created a new program for teens focused on providing a variety of activities, events and excursions each week throughout the summer. The new program is titled Dublin Teen Circuit and will be implemented utilizing existing resources as a result of the cancellation of TRL. The program is ten weeks for teens in entering sixth through tenth grades and is modeled after a"youth group" format with bi-weekly affordable teen activities, and several excursions in the greater Bay Area. These excursions are meant to provide more outdoor recreational activities as highlighted in the Strategic Plan. The summer 2010 Dublin Teen Circuit schedule is shown below: • Thursday 6/17- Swim Olympics at the Dublin Swim Center 7pm-9pm • Saturday 6/19- Lucky's Pizza Band Night, 9pm-12am • Tuesday 6/29- Kayaking in Sausalito, 8:30am-5:00pm fee $105 resident/$120, non- resident* • Tuesday 7/6- Fear Factor at Emerald Glen Park, basketball courts 6pm-8pm • Friday 7/9- Teen Swim & BBQ Night at Dublin Swim Center 5:30-8:00pm • Tuesday 7/13- Capture the Creature at Shannon Park • Thursday 7/15- Rafting, American River Sacramento, 8:00am-5:00pm fee $125 resident/ $144 non-resident* • Monday 7/19- Comedy Night at Tommy T's, 6:30pm-8:30pm • Saturday 7/24- Lucky's Pizza Band Night, 9pm-12am • Tuesday 7/27- Laser Tag at Emerald Glen Park, Picnic Reserve Area, 7:00pm-9:00pm • Thursday 7/29- Club Ed Surfing School Santa Cruz, 8:00am-5:00pm fee $112 resident/$129 non-resident* • Monday 8/2- Comedy Night at Tommy T's, 630pm-830pm • Friday 8/6- Teen Swim Dance night, 6:00pm-9:00pm • Tuesday 8/10- Water World, 8:30am-5:00pm fee $75 resident/$86 non-resident* • Saturday 8/14-Lucky's Pizza Bands, 9pm-12am • Tuesday 8/17- Shadow's Cliff's BBQ, 10:00am-5:00pm • Thursday 8/19- Water World, 8:30am-5:00pm fee $75 resident/$86 non-resident* *Trips have an additional cost.
