HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-06-2007 Draft HCAC Minutes CITY OF DUBLIN HERITAGE AND CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES OF: December 6, 2007 The December 6, 2007 meeting of the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission was called to order at 7:02 p.m. at the Dublin Civic Center, Dublin, CaliFornia, by Chairperson Mack. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Chairperson Mack led the Pledge of Allegiance. ROLL CALL Commissioners Present: Mack, Acuff, Carr, Lussie, Vonheeder-Leopold, and Swalwell Commissioners Absent: Halket ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - None APPROVAL OF MINUTES On a motion by Cm. Swalwell, seconded by Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold, with Cm. Halket absent, the Commission approved the minutes of November 8, 2007 as presented. Cm. Lussie abstained from the vote due to her absence during the November 8, 2007 meeting. WI2ITTEN COMMUNICATIONS - None PUBLIC HEARING - None UNFINISHED BUSINESS - None NEW BUSINESS 8.1 Selection Committee Appointments - Poet Laureate & City Historian Mr. John Hartnett, IIeritage and Cultural Arts Supervisor, gave the speeifics of the item as outlined in the Staff Report. After Commission discussion, Chair Mack appointed Cm. Carr to serve on the Poet Laureate Selection Committee and appointed Cm. Swalwell to serve on the City Historian Selection Committee. Cm. Acuff asked about the duties of the Poet Laureate & City Historian. Mr. Hartnett explained that the positions are voluntary, and that Staff would supervise and determine the responsibilities of the position. He stated that the positions would act as a resource to Staff. Cm. Lussie asked about the term of the position. Mr. I-Iartnett stated that the position is a 2-year term. Cm. Swalwell asked if the position would be per diem. Mr. Hartnett stated that the position is voluntary and would not receive compensation. Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold asked when the position would be advertised. Mr. Hartnett explained that the position would be advertised in January and that Staff hopes to fill the positions by March 2008. On a motion by Cm. Acuff, seconded by Cm. Vonheeder-Leopold, and by a vote of 6-0-0 with Cm. Halket absent, the Commission voted to appoint Cm. Carr to serve on the Poet Laureate Selection Committee and Cm. Swalwell to serve on the City Historian Selection Committee. 8.2 Shannon Community Center - Public Art Minutes - December 6, 2007 Page 2 of 2 Mr. John Hartnett, Heritage and Cultural Arts Supervisor, gave the specifics of the item as outlined in the Staff Report. Cm. Swalwell, in referring to one of the murals by Tricia Sheridan, asked if a river runs near the Shannon Community Center property. Mr. Hartnett stated that there is a creek near the property. Chair Mack asked if the Community Center would have furniture in the Lobby. Mr. Hartnett explained that Staff is exploring the possibility of having furniture created from the recycled cedar wood salvaged from the demolished building. Cm. Lussie commented that the artwork was representative of the Selection Committee's desire for diversity amongst the artwork selections. The Commissioners expressed delight with the chosen artwork. On a motion by Cm. Acuff, seconded by Cm. Swalwell, and by a vote of 6-0-0 with Cm. Halket absent, the Commission voted to recommend the artwork designs to the City Council for final approval. OTHER BUSINESS 9.1 Brief INFORMATIONAL ONLY Reports from Heritage and Cultural Arts Commissioners and/or Staff Cm. Lussie reported that she went to Kona, I-Iawaii and observed a unique and different kind of graftiti. She reported that she has spent a lot oF time publishing and shared information about her work with the Commissioners. Mr. Hartnett distributed information regarding the December 15, 2007 Winter Concert. He thanked the Commissioners for their suggestions on promoting the Winter Concert series which lead to successful participation at the first concert. He gave a brieF update on the status of the Kolb House proposal for the Dublin Historic Park. Chair Mack stated that she had an opportunity to visit the Heritage Center on Saturday. She stated that she was very impressed with the attendance and activities that took place. Mr. Hartnett commented that workshop attendance has tripled from the previous year. He commended Ms. Elizabeth Isles, Heritage Center Director, on increasing the number of yearly workshops from 3 to 10; recruiting volunteers; and managing the events.
