Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report - 2007 RECOMMENDATION: Receive Report FINANCIAL STATEMENT: None DESCRIPTION: The Heritage and Cultural Arts Division coordinates and implements a number of quality programs that strengthen community image, provide recreational and artistic experiences, and encourage healthy lifestyles. This goal is accomplished by providing diverse cultural program offerings in the areas of music, dance, film and visual and performing arts. Following is a summary of programs conducted during summer 2008. CULTURAL ARTS CLASSES: Cultural Arts Classes are intended to serve customers of all ages and cover a wide range of activities such as Theatre Camps, Dance Camps, Ballet, Piano, Guitar, Country Line Dance, Irish Dance, Drawing and Painting, Children's Art and Music, and others. Cultural Arts Classes provide an opportunity for participants to attempt new experiences, define current artistic skills, as well as providing a social setting for meeting new people and sharing cultural arts experiences with friends and family members. Cultural Arts Classes are taught by contracted specialty instructors. A majority of classes are taught in eight-week sessions but some are more or less than eight weeks and others are offered as one-time workshops. A total of 349 participants registered for Cultural Arts Classes during summer 2008, which was an increase of 13% over summer 2007. The cancellation rate for classes was 5% less than 2007, and the average registration per class increased over last year from 8.56 to 10.91 participants per class. Popular classes included; Dance Like the Stars, Disney Musical Review, Discover the Artist in You, Art Experience for Kids, Ballet, Beginning Irish Dance, Kindermusik, Belly Dance I, All 4 Dance, Beginning Guitar for Youth, Art Experience for Kids and Cartoon Workshop. Attachment 1 is a detailed Cultural Arts Classes Registration Report for summer 2008, which includes a breakdown of the classes offered as well as the registration for each class. Attachment 2 is a Registration Report for suimner 2007 for comparison purposes. COPIES TO: ITEM NO.: 8.2 G:UIERITAGE COMMISSION\AGENDA STMTS\2008\9-1 I Summer Quartedy report.doc New Classes Adult Tap: Seven students enrolled in this eight-week class which allowed participants to use their movement skills to learn footwork, time-steps, tap turns and other basic techniques. Dance Like the Stars & East Coast Swing: These two classes have been offered to adults for a few sessions now, with much success. For the summer, 26 students in total enrolled in these ballroom style dance classes, many of which signed up as couples. Participants learn all the latest dance moves so that they can go out on their own and continue dancing at any social gathering. Discover the Artist in You: Thirteen youth participants signed up for this four-week arts camp on Tuesdays & Thursdays at the Dublin Heritage Center classroom. Students learned about famous artists and were taught to replicate their work using different mediums such as watercolor, chalk and paint. Disney Musical Review: This one-week camp was held at Fallon Elementary school, where 25 students were taught various songs and dances and performed for friends and family at the last class. Belly Dance Specials: In order to make Belly dancing more appealing to families, mothers and daughters can sign up together for a discounted price. Arts & Crafts Workshops: Four different classes for youth will be offered as 4 and 6 week sessions including; Art-O-Rama, Color Wheel, We Love to Paint and Holiday Gift Workshop. Theatre Classes: Children's Theatre classes will be offered by two local theatre companies; Curtain Up Productions will be offering a Lullaby of Broadway Musical Review and Tri-Valley Young Performers Academy will be offering Readers Theatre, Improvisational Theatre and Young Performers Academy. Upcoming Events Winter Concert Series - November: A special "Hometown Heroes" Celebration honoring our veterans will be held on Sunday, November 9lh at the Dublin Senior Center. Following the event will be a free concert for the public featuring the Air National Guard of the West Coast. Advanced reservations for the concert will be required and some additional seats will be held the day of the show. Winter Concert Series - December: Bay Bells is back by popular demand and will offer two holiday concerts at the Senior Center at 3:00 & 4:30 pm on Sunday, December 14th. Each concert is approximately 40 minutes long and youth and children are especially invited to attend.
