SUBJECT:
“One Good Thing” Youth Mental Health Awareness Program
Prepared by: Ivan San Pedro, Recreation Supervisor
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
The Youth Advisory Committee will receive a report of the outcomes from the brainstorming
session focused on youth mental health awareness and outlines proposed next steps identified
by staff. The discussion informed the development of the “One Good Thing” program concept,
a short-term initiative centered on positive reflection, accessibility, and community support for
youth, teens, and families.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
Receive the presentation and provide direction.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
DESCRIPTION:
During the January 14, 2026 Youth Advisory Committee Regular Meeting, members explored
ways the city could support youth mental health in a manner that feels approachable, inclusive,
and relevant to today’s youth. Committee members emphasized the importance of normalizing
mental health conversations without creating pressure to disclose personal experiences. Key
themes that emerged included optional participation, positive reflection, and creating safe
spaces for youth to engage at their own comfort level.
Based on the discussion, staff consolidated the Committee’s ideas into a proposed program
concept titled “One Good Thing.” The initiative encourages participants to identify and reflect
on one positive moment from their day, reinforcing awareness of small positives as a simple
mental wellness practice. Participation may occur privately or through optional sharing,
allowing flexibility across families, peer groups, and community settings.
12
Committee members also expressed interest in ensuring the program remains supportive and
resource oriented. As part of the brainstorming outcomes, the Committee discussed the
potential inclusion of optional mental health resources during the program period, while
maintaining a non-clinical and youth-friendly approach.
Next Steps
Based on the Youth Advisory Committee’s feedback and staff review, the following next steps
are proposed:
Finalize the program framework and participation guidelines.
Staff to coordinate with the city’s Communications team and the Youth Advisory Committee
on timeline, outreach, and messaging.
Explore opportunities to share mental health resources during the program period .
Implement the “One Good Thing” initiative as a short-term program from April 4, 2026
through April 12, 2026.
Collect informal feedback from participants and the Youth Advisory Committee to assess
program impact.
