CALL TO ORDER AND PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE 2. PRESENTATIONS 3. PUBLIC COMMENT At this time, the public is permitted to address the Youth Advisory Committee on non- agendized items. Please step to the podium and clearly state your name for the record. COMMENTS SHOULD NOT EXCEED THREE (3) MINUTES. In accordance with State Law, no action or discussion may take place on any item not appearing on the posted agenda. The Committee may respond to statements made or questions asked, or may request Staff to report back at a future meeting concerning the matter. Any member of the public may contact the Recording Secretary's Office related to the proper procedure to place an item on a future Youth Advisory Committee agenda. The exceptions under which the Committee MAY discuss and/or take action on items not appearing on the agenda are contained in Government Code Section 54954.2(b)(1)(2)(3). 4. CONSENT CALENDAR Consent Calendar items are typically non -controversial in nature and are considered for approval by the Youth Advisory Committee with one single action. Members of the audience, Staff or the Youth Advisory Committee who would like an item removed from the Consent Calendar for purposes of public input may request the Chair to remove the item. 4.1 Approval of the November 13, 2024, Youth Advisory Committee Regular Meeting Minutes The Committee will consider approving the November 13, 2024, Youth Advisory Committee Regular Meeting minutes. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Agenda Item 6.1 Discuss the event, note successes, and recommend areas to improve for future events. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. DESCRIPTION: The Youth Advisory Committee hosted the Youth Mental Health Forum (Forum) on November 14, 2024, at the Shannon Community Center. The Forum targeted middle and high -school -aged youth and their parents. Panelists included a local therapist, school resource officer, counselor, and Dublin Middle and High School students. Panelists provided an overview of mental health issues, answered questions, and discussed coping strategies. The Forum also included local organizations as table sponsors, providing further information and resources for attendees. These organizations included Tri-Valley NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), Dublin Police Services Behavioral Health Unit, Dublin High School NAMI, Z-Cares Foundation, Social Edge, and Psychology's Stage. There were approximately 90 people in attendance, a 20% increase from the 2023 Youth Mental Health Forum. The Youth Mental Health Ad Hoc Committee planned the Forum, solicited panelists and table sponsors, and created a video for advertising. The event was advertised at Dublin Middle and High Schools, through social media, table sponsor websites, and The Wave digital displays. Pagel of 2 STRATEGIC PLAN INITIATIVE: None. The City of Dublin Youth Advisory Committee identified the need for an event that addresses mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, isolation, and other mental health struggles that youth experience. The Committee planned the event, solicited panelists, and advertised it. Panelists include school counselors, local therapists, teachers, coaches, organization leaders, and others who work with youth to provide an overview of mental health issues and coping strategies. The question and answer portion of the program is an opportunity for the public to ask questions and for students and parents who have experienced mental health issues to share their stories. Both students and parents are encouraged to participate. Thank you for joining the discussion as we work toward ending the stigma of talking about youth mental health. The topic of mental Sergeant Shepard supervises the Dublin Police Services Crime health has always been very important to Cathy. She has interned for Prevention/School Resource Officer Unit. Having grown up as a fairly reserved individual who find solace in illustration and music, she has always encouraged others to explore forms of media and art especially as they are struggling with their metal health. She looks forward to being a part of this year's Youth Mental Health Forum. Minal Doshi — Pediatric Social Worker Minal Doshi is a seasoned Pediatric Social Worker with over 20 years of experience in early intervention, developmental disabilities, and mental health, particularly with diverse populations. She currently works in Pediatrics at Palo Alto Medical Foundation in the Dublin and Danville clinics, providing short-term mental health support to patients ages 2-19. Michael Chavarria — Fallon Middle School Wellness Counselor Michael Chavarria is a wellness counselor at Fallon Middle School, passionate about empowering students to navigate adolescence. In his first year in this role, he aims to create a supportive environment for mental well-being and resilience. Previously, he taught U.S. History at Los Banos Junior High and completed a two-year counseling internship at both Los Banos junior High and High School. Motivated by the need for male role models in counseling, he seeks to positively influence students, especially boys facing challenges in expressing themselves. Drawing from his own experiences, Michael believes in the potential of every young person to overcome struggles and succeed. He looks forward to collaborating with peers at the Youth Mental Health Forum to enhance youth mental health. 10
