Out Of This World
Dublin thrives with a community deeply rooted in love for life, fostering harmonious
connections between people, nature, and animals. Inspired by this cosmic fusion, my design
blends the whimsical with the familiar through flat illustrations characterized by bold,
exaggerated figures, vibrant hues, and dynamic shapes. By infusing the theme of 'Out of this
world' into my artwork, I aim to capture Dublin's boundless spirit that makes it truly
extraordinary.

Artist Statement: Portal to Day and Night
Hello, my name is Andrew Lott, an East Bay born and raised artist and illustrator. Running with
this year's theme, "Out of This World", I wanted to create an interactive piece that viewers could
contemplate. The piece I created depicts a slightly trippy, yet dreamlike portal that transports
you from day to night-or night to day depending on which side of the box you are standing.
While creating the concept I was thinking about two of my favorite artists, M.C. Escher and
Salvador Dali, who liked to often challenge their viewers' perceptions.

Provide a brief statement and title (100 words or less) about your proposed artwork.
This could include your source of inspiration, the significance of the image(s) or a

its own artist statement.
Cosmic Corgi is a painting by Angela Wang. In alignment with this year’s theme,
Angela was inspired by her corgi’s “out of this world” enthusiasm for meeting
community members. The painting showcases her corgi’s adventurous spirit within the
vast cosmos, representing the idea of braving the unknown with curiosity and childlike
wonder. Through a bold, two-dimensional look, the painting embodies the pop
art/comic art style, with its vibrant colors contributing to the overall whimsical, stylized
feel of the painting.

Title: Dreamscape Rivera
Artist’s Statement:
When Indian art meets realism something special
happens. A dreamlike scene, stepping into a
magical world where time doesn't matter, and
everything becomes real. In my painting, the
kettle symbolizes our internal feeling for giving
back to nature and becoming a part of
the universe. The kettle has a Dublin
clover created in the art style called Madhubani,
which is an art style from Mithila in India which
also happens to be my mother's native land. I
deliberately made simple flowing art showing the
simplicity of nature yet the complex cycle of being.

My artwork is intended to depict the roots of Dublin in a colorful way.
Since Dublin has an Irish counterpart, I used that as a main point of
my art. I depicted central parts of Irish culture, like leprechauns and
pots of gold.
The pot of gold holds multiple meanings in my work. First, it
represents Irish culture. It also symbolizes hope, luck and the mission
to reach something out of our grasp. I tied this into the overall
lighthearted tone of the painting to convey multiple ideas.

My name is Arjun Anand and I’m a junior at Amador Valley High
School. From a young age, I took an interest in art and decided to
pursue it. Although I haven’t participated in many events like these, I
have a passion for art and I want to take my talents and put it to use
for the community.
As a child, I drew a lot and liked to sketch what I saw in books
and on TV. This later translated into a genuine interest, and I soon
found myself learning how to properly draw. My art teacher, Mrs Nidhi,
helped me hone my talent and taught me new things at the same time.
I learned better how to paint and color my sketches, and it opened
newer horizons for me. I only recently decided to pursue art for my
future, and I’ve been working to build a portfolio and resume to help
with this. I’ve been practicing for hours daily and have been taking
rigorous courses like AP art and design and digital art in order to learn
new techniques and improve as an artist and have results to show for
it.
Along with this, I have an interest in serving my community. I
take part in Boy Scouts, and I regularly help out in
service projects. I also participate in my school’s community by
being present and taking part in campus beautification activities. I
would describe myself as having a strong sense of community and I
hope to be able to use my talents to broaden my outreach in order to
benefit my society.
I believe that art is a pathway for me to be able to express my
creativity in a way that can promote creativity in others as well. I feel
that by working on this project I will not only improve myself but
improve the city of Dublin as well. Through this project I hope to be
able to brighten Dublin’s urban landscape so that it is even more
comfortable to live in.

Artist Bio
Cameron McPhie
My name is Cameron McPhie, and I am currently a freshman in high
school at Amador Valley High School. Ever since I was able to hold a
pencil, I have loved drawing, and I have continued to enjoy it ever since
then. I have taken some classes along the way, including an art class
at the Firehouse Art Center, and an online art class during Covid-19.
Having a piece of my artwork publicly displayed has always been a
dream ever since a drawing I made in kindergarten was put in our city
hall. Other than art I also really enjoy mountain biking, dirt biking, and
playing drums. Setting time aside to practice something I enjoy and
watching myself progress is something I love doing, and have done
with lots of my favorite hobbies. I am also a part of a club at school
called "Just Serve", where every month we go to meetings during lunch
to put together gifts, or plan service projects for people. I have really
enjoyed the opportunity to provide service to others, especially in a fun
and interactive way.

Artist Statements By Cameron McPhie
Peace On Earth
For this piece I wanted to create a positive and uplifting message, such
as peace on earth. We are fortunate to live in a good area, but for
some, the idea of finding a peaceful place, or even just hearing they
are loved would seem "Out of This World". I want people to see this
painting and feel loved and at peace. That is also why I choose to go
with hand signs because it portrays the message (love and peace) in a
simple and universal way. Whether you are driving by and just catch a
glimpse or are walking by and stop to look, the message will be peace
and love, which is something our world needs.
Our Heroes
This piece was intended to be one dedicated to Camp Parks, but could
also be at any location. I wanted the front side to be full of our country's
colors, red, white, and blue, to symbolize patriotism and pride for our
country. I wanted the back side to show the heroism of the soldiers at
Camp Parks (and everywhere) in a patriotic way. The sides say "our
heroes" as a way to thank soldiers, and also to remind people that what
we have today would not be here if it weren't for the soldiers that risk
their lives and die for us.

Title: Camp Park
Camp Park has transformed Dublin from a rural landscape to the bustling, developing city it is today. To
honor the past of Camp Park and its achievements, I drew four medals that were presented in the
museum which highlight the important military dedications. Moreover, I painted the magnificent sign of
Camp Park to showcase the present glory and its essential foundation in Dublin that can be seen today.
Lastly, I included the American Flag along with the Army Badge encasing the city of Dublin sign to signify
the unity, strength, and collaboration of the future.

Title: Space!
I painted an imaginary landscape of space with different planets and the iconic cheese moon floating in
the middle of the image to highlight the beauty of innocent wonder and joy. On the left of the layout, an
astronaut was ready to land upon the cheese surface as inspiring words such as dream, innovate,
create, and believe float around the starry space. I hope that this artwork will inspire both ad ults and
children to dream big and reach for the stars because the beauty and future of the city rest upon the
innovation and efforts of our community.

Title: Inspiration Day and Night
For my last design, I blended the beauty of both day and night sky together by incorporating the moon
and stars in both images. I want to highlight the importance of our consciousness to keep being inspired
and chase your dreams no matter what day and time it is. As Eleanor Roosevelt had once said, "The
future belongs to those who believed in the beauty of their dreams." It is the people who choose to
inspire and believe in change that will build and beautify the foundation of our community.

Utility Box Design - “Dublin Cosmic Dreamscape” by Haley Haslim
I drew inspiration from surrealist art and a lot of space photography for this design.
Following along with the theme of “Out of This World”, I aimed to create a cosmic/space
inspired concept blended with a few attributes of Dublin I find personally significant from my
time growing up in the city: tree-lined hills, cows, bikers, students, and a warm sense of
community.
Thank you for considering me,

Artist: Iris Shen
Iris is a seventeen-year-old student artist and is currently a sophomore at Dublin High School.
She has been taking weekly art lessons at Michelle Meng’s Art Studio for almost nine years. She
works in many mediums of art but mostly enjoys sketching and painting.
In addition to visual arts, Iris has also been trained in performing arts, such as dance and music.
Because of this, her art usually takes a more whimsical approach when it comes to landscapes.
She has lived all of her life in a suburban landscape but often takes outdoor hikes with her
mother, which she finds to be inspiring for her art.
Iris has competed in the Junior Duck Stamp Contest, the Dublin Arts Collective logo contest, and
the Alameda County Fair, in which she has won the title of Best in Class, Best in Show, and
Judge’s Favorite. She won first place at the Dublin San Ramon Women’s Club Student Art
Festival, and has been commissioned by local businesses like Country Waffles. Iris views art as a
very relaxing hobby and often finds herself drawing in her free time.

Artist Statement/Summary
My piece is titled “Observers”, referring either to the sharks and rays portrayed in the
painting or to the actual observer of the piece.
When I was young, I often thought the ocean was an entirely different world from our
own—that’s what I wanted to bring to life in my design. But I also wanted to make it something
even more unbelievable, which is why I chose to transition from a more traditional seascape to a
sky teeming with sea life. By showing these creatures in untraditional environments, I hoped to
encourage others to branch out from their comfort zones.

Title: World Reflections
Artist Statement:
An astronaut out of this world reflecting upon our world.
My inspiration comes from the brave men and women who continue to venture
into space. In this design, the astronaut becomes both the observer and the
participant, connected to the intricate web of life below while transcending
earthly boundaries. Through her visor, she sees not just a planet, but a tapestry
of stories, dreams, struggles, and the fragile beauty of our home planet.

Note on 4 designs for 4 boxes from Jen Huber
After getting word from Shaun Chilkotowsky, Parks & Community Services Manager, of the Camp Parks utility
boxes, I made my way over to the Military museum at the West Gate of Camp Parks. I was stunned by the sheer
numbers of military personnel that moved through the lat, barren track of old Dublin. As a civilian, I was
shocked at the hundreds of buildings constructed for World War II effort in a matter of months. There were so
many questions, that I met with Steve Minniear, Dublin Historian, and author of the incredibly helpful book,
“Dublin and the Tri-Valley: The World War II Years.” From these conversations and readings, including
wikipedia and US military history sites, I devised these four designs: Fleet City, the SeaBees, Parks Air Force
Base, and Women in Service. I could have also added the Livermore Air Force Strip from WWII and the current
Camp Parks military housing as two more designs. Because of the short time to the deadline, the images may
change slightly and I may be able to add more detail as I learn more about this history. All information, text or
imagery, will be put to Steve Minniear for approval. All photos used for reference will be properly
acknowledged with full rights. Lorraine Wells is not just a talented artist, but was raised a sign painter from an
early age and can script the pre-approved text onto the utility boxes. I hope these boxes will enthrall and
educate the passing public as to Dublin’s amazing past.

Camp Parks: Fleet City 1941 - 1946
With the onset of World War II, the United States Navy began building the area known as Shoemaker in
California. This location became their base for Basic Training and distribution of the SeaBees, the construction
arm of the Navy, as well as Shoemaker Hospital, and the barracks for personnel and POWs. As stated in Steve
Minniear’s book, Dublin and the Tri-Valley: The World War II Years:
“At one point during the war, the three major facilities in what is now Dublin were called “Fleet City.”
Camp parks and Shoemaker Naval Hospital were designed to support the Seabees.”
During these ive short years, the Navy constructed 110 wood barracks, 146 buildings, 697 Quonset hut
barracks, 348 Quonset huts, and 61 steel Buildings. Camp Parks trained over 116,000 men. During its height,
20,000 men were stationed at the base.
Fleet City focuses on the buildings, and the atmosphere. I have left space below each image to add
further relevant history during this time.
The Map is the most important panel. I will be detailing the location of the important, to service Men and
Women, buildings, as well as explaining their location relation to today’s streets and landmarks. Each panel
depicting a building will be painted in Edward Hopper Style with directed sunlight to depict the time of day,
morning. I include a sample of one of my paintings to illustrate the style.
I have left space at the bottom of each of these panels for further information to better educate the
public on our local history. I will be working with Steve Minniear and having him review all text for accuracy
before inking it on the panel.

SeaBees of World War II
The Seabees, or Naval Construction Battalion moved through the Camp Parks, Shoemaker Camp Naval base
between 1941 and 1946. It is estimated that as many as 71 separate Seabee battalions went through between
1943 and 1945, alone. Many were proud of their role in the SeaBees and the Navy yearbook from this time
includes pictures of black Americans alongside white Americans. I would like to locate photos of black Seabees
who spent time at Camp Parks. Steven Minniear, Dublin’s historian, assures me with time, this can be
accomplished. The image of three sailors on one side, would become portraits of three men who served locally.
The other panels include training that occurred at the base, as well as a panel depicting what SeaBees did in the
Paci ic, once deployed. I have left space at the bottom of each of these panels for further information to better
educate the public on our local history. I will be working with Steve Minniear and having him review all text for
accuracy before inking it on the panel.
The style of painting on this panel will be more atmospheric. The personnel will have some detail, but soft
edges and warm light. Mount Diablo will feature prominently over the Ri le practice panel.

Parks Air Force Base: 1951 to 1959
With the onset of the Korean War, the United States Air Force took control of what was left of Camp Parks. They
renamed it by dropping the “Camp” and turned it into a Basic Training Center. Eventually they moved the basic
training to other air force bases. However, they issued yearbooks for personnel during this time. The photos
these are based on are from the actual yearbook and I include an aircraft lying over in each panel relevant to
the war and the year. I have left space at the bottom of each of these panels for further information to better
educate the public on our local history. I will be working with Steve Minniear and having him review all text for
accuracy before inking it on the panel.
The style of painting on this panel will be atmospheric, featuring billowing clouds, or mist, on every panel. The
personnel will have some detail, but soft edges and warm light. I include a U2 Stealth plane on the top for
intrigue.

Camp Parks: Women in Service
United States Naval Women’s Reserve or WAVES (Women Appointed Volunteers for Essential Service) were at
Camp Parks from 1942 to 1946. To be accepted a woman had to be from 20 to 49 and have a college degree or
the equivalent work experience. As for Navy Nurses, at the onset of the war, there were 800 active duty nurses
but by the end of the war, that number grew to almost 1, 800, with 9,000 in reserves. Whether a WAVE working
in an of ice or engineering position or a nurse at Shoemaker Hospital or later on a Navy Ship the work was
hard and the women were exposed to constant hostility from men. So much so, that I am considering adding
the picture of WAVES eating at their own designated table in the Mess Hall, to give them some peace. The
photos will not be copied exactly and I hope to use some local nurses and WAVES from their yearbook. I would
like to put a portrait of the highest ranking woman of icer today: Admiral Michelle Howard. I have left space at
the bottom of each of these panels for further information to better educate the public on our local history. I
will be working with Steve Minniear and having him review all text for accuracy before inking it on the panel.

DUBLIN CALL FOR ARTISTS: Utility Box Art Project
Title: “A World in a Grain of Sand”
Artist Statement
My proposal for this design looks at the world up-close, re-imagining the topography of Dublin and
surrounding area as a network of paths between dirt and stones. With this design I want to invite the
viewer to consider each stone as a mosaic tile that contributes to the whole. Out of this world of
crossroads where so many people pass every day, we have created a home where each person in this
region is essential to the mosaic of our uniquely diverse landscape.

Understories
This water-based spray stencil of California’s enigmatic banana slugs was inspired by a
riverside camping trip. These gastropods, which are present around the Bay Area, clung to
the underskirts of the river’s banks in the day’s heat, except for one brave soul sending itself
on a slime rope swing into the river – a curiosity which sent me and our 4-year-old
investigating the details of these underfoot lives.
Understories plays with the “Out of This World” theme - referencing an other-worldly and
prehistoric creature that inhabits our day-to-day forest meanderings, but experiences
another sensorial universe of scents, munchings, and pathmaking.

Title: Ancestral Lights
Artist Statement
“Ancestral Lights” is a reflection of the beautiful cosmic energies
that birthed the universe and give us life to this day. They are at
once beyond this world and deep within each of us. Uniting
unique individual and diverse communities like our own the aim
of this style design is to cultivate connection through awe,
wonderment and appreciation of beauty thats sometimes seems
out of this world. Intertwoven in the design are symbols
representing life, love and knowledge of self. These symbols are
inspired by my African American heritage, Adinkra symbols of the
Akan, and hieroglyphics of Ancient Egypt.

Life Doesn't Stink
Titles and Artist Statements
By: Lisa Long
This piece was inspired as I volunteered with a group of middle schoolers. The most common
phrases I heard were things like "life stinks" or "life is so unfair". This feels like a very common
message in the world. But I believe there is real power is the ·out of this world" message that
Life Doesn't Stink! We can move past disappointments and hard things when we look for the
good and find things to be grateful for.
Look Up
As I've studied the effects of depression and anxiety on our parents and teens, I've noticed that
it tends to make us look down, both literally and metaphorically. We cast our eyes down to the
ground and we also look down on ourselves and our potential. My message is to Look Up! Look
forward, move past, feel hopeful and believe in possibility. I hope that youth and adults alike can
embrace this out of this world message.
Climbing Mountains To gether
I have always been inspired by mountains and their beauty and majesty. But, it was only after I
summited my first mountain that I realized how important it is to climb mountain wit pople
who push and strengthen you. This is true for the metaphorical mountains we chmb in hfe-we
should climb together, lift each other, recognize and help each other through our hardest
moments. This is how we can stand on top of the world and see the true beauty from the
summit.

INCREDIBLE CREATURES
In response to the prompt “out of this world”, I thought of the strange
and lovely leafy sea dragon and seahorses overall. They seem such unlikely creatures,
part horse, part worm, part branch even, the males even give birth rather than the
females. I have encountered them in aquariums, clinging to grasses with their tails,
or zooming slowly through the water. I find them endearing in their strangeness,
and unearthly beauty, and believe their originality should be celebrated. I have
painted them as I find them; quizzical, colorful, and curious.

The theme of "Out of this World" inspired this design. It depicts someone starting from
seemingly the depths of the ocean striving for something beyond. She is reaching to some place
beyond the other side---something out of this world. It represents humanity's goal to strive from
the very bottom to something truly great.

MY PROFILE
I'm Nidhi an Art & Design educator, researcher, and a mother.

Title: Surrealist Transformation
The title of my art is Surrealist Transformation. It's combination of surrealist elements as
the hybrid bird and fish diving into the ocean and transforming into each other adorned in
traditional Indian Mandala art. I was inspired by the Metamorphosis by Gurbuz Dogan Ekioglu
and indian mandala art which both, in harmony, highlight the mysterious and surrealist nature of
an ocean. The style of Indian Mandala art allows intricate geometric details to craft beautiful
designs that embody spiritual and religious significance in Indian culture. The contrasting
elements like the fish and bird signify change and renewal in society as we transform into
something new and beautiful like them.

Description:
This piece illustrates the feeling of being in a dream-like state outside of reality. It’s
a relatable feeling that often can not be put into words. I wanted to imitate the
floating feeling right before you fall asleep with the figure as well as the jellyfish
and bubbles that all float in the air. The piece includes a galaxy background with
many stars which I would use brush flicking techniques for and a lot of soft edges I
would have to blend.

Title: Dreams Open Doors
Arst: Sheena Dale
Arst Statement:
As an engineer, I have seen firsthand that we can create anything we dream. I was inspired by the recent
NASA missions to go back into space and out of this world. The men and women who dare to do that
grew up with the dreams of space as a kid. I wanted to show that it is possible to achieve those dreams
or any dreams we have as children. The art is intended to inspire kids to connue dreaming because the
power of our dreams can open doors. And in this case, the open door symbolizes going “out of this
world” into what we had always dreamt about

Youna Son has lived in Dublin throughout the pandemic, before moving to
Pleasanton. She is 13 years old, and always has had a passion for arts and crafts,
whatever form it may be in. Doodles, painting, clay, she was interested in all of
it.Throughout her school life, she has always been known as the artsy kid, even in
second grade. Although her mom insisted she should take an art class outside of
school, Youna never really gave it much thought, liking the idea of being self taught.
In the past three years of her Middle School life, whenever there was a chance to
take a class related to art, she jumped in without any hesitation. This year, she has
been in three art classes, 3D art, digital art, and art on paper. She has bonded with
many people through her love of creating unique and fun pieces, like her art teacher,
who she's been a student of for 3 years. For Youna, art is a way to express yourself,
no matter what you want to express. She loved art for this, and loved expressing
herself through her art, rather than words.
