EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:The City Council will present the Gun Violence Awareness Day and Month Proclamation to the Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America -Livermore Valley Chapter.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:Present the proclamation.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:None.
DESCRIPTION:National Gun Violence Awareness Day and Month brings attention to gun violence and its impacts, and commemorates the life of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old who was tragically shot and killedin Chicago in 2013. National Gun Violence Awareness Day is observed annually on the first Friday of June and is marked by citizens wearing orange to pay tribute to Hadiya. Orange is a color that symbolizes the value of human life and to help raise awareness about gun violence. Throughout the month of June, many organizations across California, including Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and throughout the United States will be holding events in recognition of the many who are tragic victims of gun violence.

A PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
CITY OF DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA
“Gun Violence Awareness Day and Month”
WHEREAS,every day, 100 Americans are killed by gun violence and on average there are nearly 13,000 gun homicides every year.
Americans are 25 times more likely to be killed with guns than people in other high-income countries; and
WHEREAS,California has the 45th highest rate of gun deaths in the United States, with over 3,000 gun deaths every year, a rate of 7.6
deaths per 100,000 people; and
WHEREAS,gun violence touches every segment of our society. It increases the probability of deaths in incidents of domestic violence,
raises the likelihood of fatalities by those who intend to injure others and among those who attempt suicide, places children and young
people at special risk, and disproportionately affects communities of color; and
WHEREAS, protecting public safety in the communities they serve is an integral part of public safety in our communities; and
WHEREAS,in January 2013, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was tragically shot and killed, and on June 3, 2022, to recognize her 25
th
birthday, people across the United States will recognize National Gun Violence Awareness Day and wear orange in tribute to Hadiya, other
victims of gun violence, and their loved ones; and
WHEREAS,the idea was inspired by a group of Hadiya’s friends, who asked their classmates to commemorate her life by wearing the
color orange because hunters wear orange to announce themselves to other hunters when out in the woods, and orange is a color that
symbolizes the value of human life.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Dublin does hereby proclaim June 3, 2022 as “Gun Violence
Awareness Day” and June 2022 as “Gun Violence Awareness Month” and encourages citizens in the City of Dublin to join in commemorating
Hadiya by wearing orange on June 3, 2022.
