DESCRIPTION In May of 1989 , the Dublin .City Council approved a
request for funding in the amount of $5 ,000 for the Dublin Substance Abuse
Council (DSAC) . Staff was directed to include funding for DSAC in the
Fiscal Year 1989-90 Budget , and DSAC was requested to report back to the
Council in January with a mid-year progress report .
Karen Seals from DSAC has prepared a mid-year report and income statement
covering the first six months of FY89-90 . As shown in the attached report ,
DSAC has been extremely successful in carrying out the mission of the
organization . DSAC worked very closely with the Dublin Unified School
District , the City and various community organizations to plan and organize
the City ' s 2nd Annual Red Ribbon Week Celebration . Additionally "Challenge
Days" were planned for high school students . DSAC was successful in
raising additional funding which is shown in the income statement .
Plans are underway for many more activities including a Drug Information
Night for Dublin citizens .
It is the recommendation of staff that the City receive the report from the
Dublin Substance Abuse Council . Karen Seals from DSAC will be in
attendance should the City Council have additional questions regarding the
activities of DSAC .

The Dublin Substance Abuse Council (DSAC) has had. an active year . We have
been able to match funds with the County for two Challenge Days and are
planning two more this Spring with County funds .
The DSAC sponsored a very active Red Ribbon Week in which all schools in
the City of Dublin participated . The children ' s posters were displayed in
downtown stores and red ribbons were placed throughout the City .
McGruff visited each of the elementary schools and handed out pencils to
the children . Wristbands imprinted with "The Choice for Me is Drug Free"
were also given to the children and they were very well received .
The Childrens Theatre Workshop performed a play entitled "My Dad and Me" at
all the schools in the City of Dublin . The Hayward Fishery held a Red
Ribbon Night Dinner where all customers were given red ribbons and drug
information . The City of Dublin had a Red Ribbon Week to be proud of , and
the DSAC looks forward to sponsoring it again this year .
Two members of DSAC attended the California Conference on Alcohol Problems
in Oakland for one week . The theme of the conference was "Transforming Our
- Communities" , and alot was learned about the field of prevention . -
The DSAC is currently adopting it ' s bylaws and has plans for many more
activities . A Drug Information Night for Dublin citizens is currently
being planned , and members are looking forward to sponsoring Friday Night
Live programs for Dublin teens .
The DSAC would like to thank the City of Dublin for all it ' s support and
look forward to working together again this year .
